Sadness, happiness, excitement, joy, and astonishment are only but a few of the emotions you will endure while reading the book Heaven is for Real, the amazing story of a brave and eccentric little boy named Colton Burpo. In March of 2003, what seemed to be a seemingly typical family trip turned into a terrifying fight for Todd and Sonja Burpoââ¬â¢s little boyââ¬â¢s life. Even after months of injury and illness within the Burpo family, Coltonââ¬â¢s incident tops them all. The strength of this little boy, even at the young age of only four, is truly inspirational. This book truly portrays the crazy days, weeks, months, and even years that follow the frightening experiences that this family had to go through. In February of 2003, the Burpoââ¬â¢s decide to take a family outing. The Butterfly Pavilion is their destination of choice, and the family couldnââ¬â¢t be any happier to get away. The Thursday before theyââ¬â¢re to leave, however, Colton isnââ¬â¢t feeling well and had complained of a stomach ache. Their babysitter, Norma, calls Sonja at work to report a plunge in little Coltonââ¬â¢s sickness. After a trip to the doctor, the Burpos find that the stomach flu is the cause of Coltonââ¬â¢s poor health. They see the fun-filled trip slipping away as soon as it had come, and nobody in the household is content. But, by morning, Colton is up and feeling well again; the Burpoââ¬â¢s then set out on their adventure. They soon made it to the Crawl-A-See-Um right outside of Denver, and the kidââ¬â¢s stop to see the many tarantula exhibits. These draw Cassie and Colton Burpo in like magnets. The kids are easily amazed by the many eight-legged creatures, which shock the children with everything that they do. They soon see Rosie, the spider you can hold in exchange for a sticker. Cassie holds her, but Colton is afraid, so they make their way on through. After visiting the many aquariums, they make their way to the butterfly pavilion. They see a monarch fly by, enjoying the beauty of the beautiful orange creature. Sonja, remembering the kids want to swim, insists they leave. As they walk by Rosie, Todd asks Colton if he wants to try and hold Rosie. Colton is positive that this time, he will do it. He ventures up to Rosie, holds her, and gets a sticker. He leaves feeling triumphant as they leave. After swimming, the Burpos head to the Old Chicago Restraunt in Greeley to eat with Pastor Steve Wilson and his wife. While sitting around the large, round booth, they talk about their churches and enjoy Italian food. Todd and Sonja decide to visit Pastor Wilsonââ¬â¢s church the next day, as Rebecca Wilson divides her time between the conversation and coloring with the kids. Coltonââ¬â¢s eery quietness isnââ¬â¢t noticed throughout the dinner, until Colton makes a remark about his stomach again. They Burpos decide to cut the dinner short, after Colton and Cassie both decide they arenââ¬â¢t feeling well. Coltonââ¬â¢s statement comes true, as he throws up all of that night. Soon the next day, they decide to take Colton to the hospital. ââ¬Å"Could it be appendicitis? â⬠Sonja asks the doctor, fearing for bad news. Colton squirms, afraid of the IV as any kid would be. He assures her that the blood test donââ¬â¢t show this, but they donââ¬â¢t know what has happened. As Coltonââ¬â¢s health gets worse, Todd and Sonja worry for their son. Then the worst thing yet happened, the shadow of death. Todd sees it on Colton, and afterwards they decide to take Colton to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center. Calling ahead to let the doctor know, they set out towards the center. Todd and Sonja blame each other throughout the whole trip, but when they reach the center and the doctor has gone to lunch, theyââ¬â¢re out of people and reasons to blame. Fifteen minutes later, the doctor comes in and looks over Colton. They perform a CT scan, and send the Burpos into a secluded waiting room. ââ¬Å"I think this is it,â⬠are the only words Sonja can muster out as she cradles Coltonââ¬â¢s limp body. Five tiresomely long minutes later, a Radioligist comes out to let them know Colton has a ruptured appendix and needs emergency surgery. They wheel Colton away on a gurney, preparing him for his surgery. He thrashes, screaming for his dad, as they put the IV in his arm. Anger flashes in Toddââ¬â¢s eyes, realizing that he may have waited too long and might not see his son alive again. He rages at God, assuming he is going to take his son before he had the time to even live. After the surgery is over, Todd is asked to come back. All the fear and anger leaves his eyes, when he is told that his son is conscious and has been asking for him. Todd and Sonja are amazed at how much better their son feels, looks, and seems. They are told, seven days after checking into the hospital, that they can take their son home. After packing the mulititude of toys and clothes, they go to leave. The elevators are sliding shut, when they are told they cannot leave. New pockets of infection show in Coltonââ¬â¢s CT scan, in his abdomen. Sonja, completely exasperated, has a breakdown. The church comes to pray with Colton shortly after, only praying for one simple thing: gas. They are told that if Colton passes gas, that it would be a good sign. Within an hour, the prayer was answered. Colton felt better the next morning, and doctors were shocked at this miracle. After what seemed like forever, Colton and the rest of the Burpo family can finally go home after this horrific event. After they go home, life seems to go back to normal. It wasnââ¬â¢t until four months after Coltonââ¬â¢s surgery, on their Fourth of July trip, that they realize their son has witnessed something extraordinary. On their way, Todd jokingly asks Colton if he wants to go back to the hospital. The response he gets is far from what he expects, however. Colton proceeds to tell him that the hospital is where angels sang to him and he sat in Jesusââ¬â¢ lap. Todd and Sonja laugh it off, thinking Colton had imagined the whole thing. They continue to believe so, until he tells them exactly what they were soing, and where, during his surgery. He also offers more information, spread over the next years. Days, weeks, and months all came with new information. ââ¬Å"Did you know that Jesus had a cousin? Jesus told me his cousin baptized him,â⬠Colton informed his father one night. He tells his dad about a horse that he petted, Godââ¬â¢s beautiful eyes and clothes, his crown, and Godââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"markers,â⬠nonchalantly one night, as if he were talking about what he ate for lunch. When Todd realizes that by ââ¬Å"markers,â⬠Colton means the nails in Jesusââ¬â¢ hands and feet, he knows that he canââ¬â¢t be making it up. Todd and Sonja are amazed at all the things he knows all of a sudden. The normal nights come often, but the talks about supernatural phenomenons become spaced out. Colton begins to talk about his Pop, who died before Colton was born. He also tells his dad that he knows that Jesus told him to be a pastor, and when he agreed, Jesus was very happy. He also told his mom that he knows he had another sister, but she died in her tummy. He tells her that she looks like Cassie and is dark headed, like Sonja. He also says that she didnââ¬â¢t have a name, because they hadnââ¬â¢t named her yet. When Sonja begins to freak out, Colton explains that sheââ¬â¢s okay and that God adopted her. Colton also tells about Godââ¬â¢s throne room, and makes one point in particular stand out: God loves the children! After Colby is born, they realize they have to hire a babysitter. They decide in a very mature for her age 8th grader, named Ali. All is well, until one night they come home to Ali crying. When Sonja asks her why, she says that Colton was crying and tells her why. Colton, after being put in bed, tells Ali that he misses his sister that died in mommyââ¬â¢s tummy. When he begins to cry, Ali holds him until he finally cries himself to sleep. This isnââ¬â¢t the only serious thing Colton says about Heaven. One night, while at home, he tells his dad that the angels have wings to fight off Satan. He tells him that there is going to be a battle, and that Todd will have to fight in it. He also tells that he sees the power God sends his dad during church, while he preaches. Todd and Sonja now believe Colton more and more by the passing day. 2007 is the first time that the Burpos told about Coltonââ¬â¢s indifferent, to say the least, experience. Todd now found himself with more and more questions about Heaven and what his 4 year old saw. One woman, in tears, approaches and asks if Colton might have seen her stillborn baby in Heaven. He asks the woman that if she believes that God loves her as much as God loves him, and if he loves her living son as much as he loves his living son, then why wouldnââ¬â¢t he love her unborn child as much as his? At this moment, he knew that God had sent him the power to help that woman; the same power Colton had claimed to have seen God shoot down. Years have passed since Coltonââ¬â¢s accident, but his story is and will be known for many more years to come. I found it hard to connect to the character Todd Burpo because of his devout religious views on life. Although I was baptized, I grew up in a Unitarian Universalist home and was never educated on the bible, this makes it challenging to understand the many connections that are made by Todd during the book. From my reading so far, it seems as if Todd believes that everything we do is elicited by god. In other words Todd believes that everything has happened for a reason as gods greater plan for all of us. 9/3/13Journal Entry#2Pages: 28-59 Burpo family finds out that Coltonââ¬â¢s appendix has ruptured. Colton tells his father that he had met John The Baptist and many other characters from The Bible. Colton begins to explain the different things that he witnessed in heaven. -Coltonââ¬â¢s Idea of Heaven Jesus- Bright white clothes with a purple sash that crossed his soldier down to his hip (purple being the color of kings/loyalty). Said by Colton to have beautiful eyes. Jesus had ââ¬Å"red markersâ⬠on his palms and the tops of his feet (this ââ¬Å"red markersâ⬠were bloody scars that Jesus had from his crucifixion). ââ¬Å"Had hair on his faceâ⬠(beard). And wore ââ¬Å"a crown, and it had this this diamond thing in the middle of it and it was kind of pinkâ⬠(Burpo 66). Everyone in heaven has wings except for Jesus. Everyone uses their wings to fly around from place to place. Colton says he was only in heaven for 3 minutes. Todd infers that since Colton couldnt have done the things he had in only three minutes that ââ¬Å"Heaven timeâ⬠is different than ââ¬Å"earth timeâ⬠Personal Statement Even before I began reading ââ¬Å"Heaven is for Realâ⬠I already knew about Coltons idiosyncratic experience because I read the back cover. Instead of being lured in to read more of the book, I was already informed of the what the majority of the novel will be about. In my opinion this makes the book more predictable, and not as interesting to read. One of the things that the book lacked in this section of chapters is something that keeps you wanting more. Instead I found myself hoping the book would end soon; I think this was the result of already knowing what the upcoming events would be. Todd and Sonja continue to ask Colton questions about the things he did, and the things he saw while he was in heaven. I think that sooner or later Todd will share to his church Coltonââ¬â¢s story of his trip to heaven. While riding in the car, Colton shares that he saw Pop; Toddââ¬â¢s grandfather. For many years The Burpos were worried about wether or not Pop was happy and if he had made it to heaven. It was a relief to everyone that there was proof that Pop was happy in heaven, and awaiting everyone to join him. While in heaven Colton finds out that he has a sister that died in ââ¬Å"the belly of his mommyâ⬠. This was one of the grand moments for Sonja because she knew that her baby was safe in heaven. In this section Colton begins to tell his father about ââ¬Å"The Throne Room of Godâ⬠and what it looked like. Through out these pages Colton expresses multiple times how much God loves the children. Todd becomes worried about Colton because Colton did not fear death instead Colton answers to death as ââ¬Å"That means I get to go back to heaven! â⬠-Coltonââ¬â¢s view of The Throne Room of God Really Big. Jesus sits to the right of God. The angel Gabriel sits to Gods left side. Personal Statement 9/6/13 Journal Entry#5 Pages: 115-150 Since Todd is the town pastor he has to pray for the familyââ¬â¢s that are loosing a loved one. One day Todd brings Colton with him. Colton have been gone to heaven assures this old man at deaths beds rest that the first person he will see in heaven is Jesus. Colton tells his family that no-one is old in heaven and that everyone is middle aged except for the children which are still growing until they become ââ¬Å"middle agedâ⬠and then stop growing. Todd is told by Colton that he will be going to fight in a battle that is coming soon in the future. Todd will be fighting against ââ¬Å"monstersâ⬠. Todd infers that Colton is talking about the battle of Armageddon. Ever since Colton went to heaven Todd and Sonja have been trying to see what God looks like through the eyes of Colton; they show him different pictures of God made by artist around the world. None had ever been right until Todd shows Colton the picture of God painted by Akiane Kramarik a twelve year old prodigy Personal Statement What I admired most about ââ¬Å"Heaven is for Realâ⬠was how the book came to an end. As hope and happiness was restored in The Burpo family I nearly forget about Coltonââ¬â¢s traumatizing near death experience. But for Todd Burpo thinking about loosing his son must have been one of the most hurtful feelings he could possibly have endured. Although Todd is a devoted religious leader and everyone tells him how lucky he is to have a son that went to heaven, he still put his family first; he would rather have his son be a normal kid than see him come close to death again and thats one of the most important messages of all. ?-Akiane Kramariksââ¬â¢s painting of God at age 8 II. Author Response In the novel ââ¬Å"Heaven is for Realâ⬠there are many characters that make up the amazing story that itââ¬â¢s turned out to be. Although this novel is all about Colton, the boy who visited heaven, the character that stood out to me the most was Todd Burpo the father of Colton, the author of this novel, and in my opinion the lead of Heaven is for Real. Todd starts out the book as a average guy with the job of a Pastor, in a normal family, with everyday struggles. Todd went through a broken ankle, kidney stones, and a cancer scare. But little did he know the biggest journey of his life was yet to come. With a son that went to heaven and with the prayers God had answered, Todd Burpo ends the book feeling both grateful and remorse for the things his 4 year old son went through. Even though Toddââ¬â¢s life was led by Christianity he still wouldnt put his son through the pain he endured even if they lead to Coltonââ¬â¢s storyââ¬â¢s of heaven. Thats what I liked most about Todd Burposââ¬â¢s character. Since Todd Burpo is a pastor and believes that everything we do is connected god, the minimal amount of dialogue he has in the book is quickly related back to his thoughts on religious views that he shares with his readers. The author Todd Burpo, who is also the lead character of the book, formatted the novel so that with every chapter you would learn something new about the family that you didnt know before. This approach in my opinion was made so that the reader would stay interested in the book. From doing some outside research and watching interviews with the Burpo family I learned that while disputing the name for the book, Colton(almost 8 years old at the time) told his parents that all he wanted people around the world to know was that ââ¬Å"Heaven is for Realâ⬠. Everyone seemed to like the name and it stuck. I think personally that even though the words ââ¬Å"Heaven is for Realâ⬠were not the most formal words to use, sometimes the words of a child are the most straight forward and are at times easier to understand. III. Self Reflection The book ââ¬Å"Heaven is for Realâ⬠is about a father named Todd Burpo and the story of his four year old son who visited heaven, came back and was able to tell his story to the world. Throughout Heaven is for Real I realized some things about me as a reader. For the first time in a while Iââ¬â¢ve been able to finish a book from cover to cover. The novel itself in my opinion wasnt very good literature but it intrigued me to learn about heaven in the eyes of a Christian. This also leads me to say that in some way this book was difficult for me to read because of the many references made to the bible; which in my case were not easy to understand. A strategy I used to finish this book was listening to the audio while I read at the same time. The reason I made the decision to listen to the audio is because it generally takes me about 2 minutes to read each page of the book and this causes me to lose interest before I get to the end. I chose this novel because it was one I had bought a while ago and I never got a chance to read it until now. The book was one that I had hoped to be interesting; which it was. I have no regrets reading Heaven is for Real but it wouldnt be something I would recommend to someone as a ââ¬Å"great bookâ⬠. Although reading about heaven and Christianity was very intriguing the next book I hope to read is ââ¬Å"Gathering Blueâ⬠by Luis Lowry which is about Kira an orphaned girl who is left to an ambivalent future.

Causes of the Fall of the Roman Republic This paper discusses the statement, ââ¬Å"The Roman Republic was brought down not by luxury or corruption but by fundamental flaws in the structure of its political systemâ⬠. As will be argued, a statement such as this can only be discussed in relative, not absolute, terms, as no one cause for the demise of the Roman Republic can ever, realistically, be said to have been the factor that caused itââ¬â¢s fall. Under this framework, then, the first section of the paper discusses the various theories that have been posited to explain the fall of the Roman Republic, with the second section looking, in detail, at the political structure of the Roman Republic and how this could potentially have contributed to its ultimate demise. Gibbonââ¬â¢s great tome The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire essentially concludes that the Roman Empire was brought down through moral decadence. Other authors have argued for different reasons behind the fall of the Roman Republic, with recent scholars (for example Hunt et al., 2001) arguing that the Republic did not fall, rather that it was subject to a highly complex transformation, with additional confusion amongst scholars as to when the Republic actually fell: some argue that the Republic fell in 476 with the deposition of Romulus Augustus; others argue that the Republic continued until as late as 1453, and that it fell only when Constantinople was lost. This next section will present some of the most prevalent theories about the fall of the Roman Republic. Ferrill (1998) has argued that the Roman Republic fell due to itââ¬â¢s barbarization, that the influx of German mercenaries in to the Roman military led to lack of loyalty and complacency amongst the Roman ranks, leading to a surge in decadence amongst the Roman soldiers and citizenry. This somewhat supports Gibbonââ¬â¢s (1983) assertion that decadence was responsible for the fall of the Roman Republic. Gibbonââ¬â¢s The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire essentially concludes that the Roman Empire was brought down through moral decadence, as he argues, through the loss of what he terms ââ¬Ëthe loss of civic virtueââ¬â¢. The influx of barbarian mercenaries, coupled with the rising popularity of Christianity, Gibbon argues, led the Roman populace to come to believe more in the afterlife, leading to the loss of social structures, and, ultimately, leading to the fall of the Roman Republic. Other historians contradict this theory of Gibbons (1983) and Ferrill (1998), arguing that the Roman Republic continued to be strong right up until the Muslim conquests in the seventh century, at which point these conquests, amongst other things, disrupted trade routes, leading to a general economic downturn in Western Europe. It is argued that this economic downturn led, ultimately, to the disbandment of the Roman way of life, leading to the ultimate fall of the Roman Republic. This theory has, however, been recently rebutted by a number of historians who have argued that trade routes would not have been so badly affected, that trade must have entered Western Europe by some other route as the discovery, and therefore existence, of Islamic currency in Roman areas is suggestive of a two-way trade. Economic explanation for the fall of the Roman Republic are popular, however, and will be looked at in further detail later in the paper. Buryââ¬â¢s 1923 History of the Later Roman Empire presents in-depth research in to the issue of the fall of the Roman Republic and concludes with a complex theory to explain itââ¬â¢s fall. Essentially, Bury (1923) argues that the Roman Republic fell due to many simultaneously occurring factors, such as a general economic decline in the region, the influence of German (Barbarian) troops on Roman soldiers, and the dependence of Roman military leaders on Barbarian manpower, the depopulation of Italy[1], various murders and treasons that occurred within the top ranks of Roman politics, and the absence of any convincing leader following the murder of Aetius. As Bury clearly states in his concluding sections, Roman power gradually collapsed, and ââ¬Å"â⬠¦.was the consequence of a series of contingent events.â⬠. As he argues, no general causes can be assigned, and nothing suggested to him, through his research, that the fall of the Roman republic was by any means inevitable. Bark (1958) argues that it was the massive effort that was involved in keeping the Roman Republic together that, ultimately, led to its fall. Around this time, feudalism was developing, yet the Roman ruling classes were not well organized in terms of having a system in place to collect taxes from their people, such that it became the responsibility of the middle classes to undertake the massive task of collecting grain taxes. As such, only a small proportion of these taxes actually arrived back to the Imperial government, leading to massive losses in revenues for the Roman rulers, having massive side-effects, such as decreased investment in the Roman military, for example. In addition, currency inflation, through a reduced supply of gold in to the Republic (see Jones, 1974) led to the government leaking money, with their stock of cash being reduced, leading, ultimately, to massive cash flow problems for the Republic, with obvious implications, in terms of funding the military and fun ding public building projects, for example. These two factors, occurring in conjunction, argues Bark (1958) led to the ultimate demise of the Roman Republic. Toynbee (1939) preceded Barkââ¬â¢s (1958) logic that the Roman Republic was an economically poor force, with his detailed research showing that Roman leaders had no budgeting system in place, leading to obvious problems with controlling cash flow, leading, ultimately, to a dwindling of whatever cash resources were available and to a lack of cash availability for providing for military expenditure, or public works, for example. This method of budgeting had proved successful as long as the Romans continued to expand into other areas, from which they could loot existing resources, but as soon as the Roman Republic stopped expanding, this source of revenue also stopped. At this point, the Romans, without an adequate budgeting system, coupled with loss of tax money through an inadequate collection system, coupled with currency inflation (see, also, Jones, 1974), faced massive economic problems, causing, it is argued, the ultimate demise of the Roman Republic (Toynbee, 1939). Building on this theory, Tainter (1990) argues that the fall of the Republic was due to marginal returns on investments, again contributing to cash flow problems for the Republic as a whole, ultimately contributing to its decline; unlike many authors who study the collapse of the Roman Republic, Tainter (1990) argues strongly that the fall of the Roman Republic may have been a good thing for many Roman subjects, in terms of benefits arising from not having to invest in maintaining such a complex society (i.e., no taxes to pay etc.) and indeed, archeological evidence, through studies of human bones pre- and immediately post- the fall of the Roman Republic, post-fall, humans were better nourished. Rostovtzeff (1957) also subscribes to this economic theory of the fall of the Roman Republic, arguing that the free trade market economy developed by the Roman Republic worked up until the debasement of the currency in the third century, at which point inflation began to hurt citizens, who then began to move away from urban areas, to move to the country in order to undertake subsistence farming as a way of surviving i.e., they could grow their own crops for food, and in this way not have to rely on failing monetary sources to keep them alive. Bartlett (1994) continues the work of Toynbee (1939) arguing that by the third century monetary taxation had been replaced with direct requisitioning, where food and cattle, instead of money, were collected directly from farmers. This pathway, argues Bartlett (1994) led directly to the development of feudalism, with estates formed around the cultivation of crops and cattle, and not, as such, dependent on any form of trade whatsoever. This, on a grand scale, Republic-wide, is then argued to have led to a massive downturn in the economic fortune of the Republic, and to a decrease in its military capability, for example, with, again, obvious consequences for maintaining control over the entire Roman territory. The research of Heather (2005) leads to conclusions about the fall of the Roman Republic which differ from previous theories: he argues that the emergence of the Persian Empire led to the Roman Republic stripping tax collection from its Eastern edge, leading to a decline in economic revenues, a decline in governance in these areas, and a mass influx of peoples to the empire, for example, by the Barbarians, leading to massive levels of immigration to the Roman Republic, leading to obvious social problems. Through his exhaustive research, Heather explicitly rejects Gibbonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëmoral decadenceââ¬â¢ theory for the decline of the Roman Republic. Neither does he see any validity in the arguments of those who support political infighting as the major reason for the fall of the Roman Republic. Heather supports the arguments of Bury (1923) who argues that the fall of the Roman Republic was not inevitable but that it occurred as a result of a series of events which, unfortunately , came together at the same time, and which, ultimately, led to the fall of the Republic. Heatherââ¬â¢s viewpoint is argued against by Ward-Perkins in his 2005 book The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilisation which argues, in a similar manner to previous historians assessments of the situation, that the fall of the Republic occurred as a result of political instability, foreign invasions and economic instability due to reduced tax revenues. The massive, and sustained, immigrations of foreigners, such as the barbarians, Ward-Perkins (2005) argues, led to a weakening of the tax base, leading to an inability to equip the Roman army, with obvious deleterious consequences. Ward-Perkins, ultimately, however, argues, as do Bury (1923) and Heather (2005) that the fall of the Roman Republic was due to a complex mixture of processes and events which came together at the same time to lead to a definite fall in the Roman Republic. Levick (1982) looks at the morals and political system of the Roman Republic, and their relation to its fall. She argues that ââ¬Ëambitioââ¬â¢ ââ¬â ambition ââ¬â led to major political difficulties during the last century of the Roman Republic, with a thirst for ultimate power leading to in-fighting and political problems. As Levick (1982) argues, however, it is difficult to infer the Roman political structure from contemporary documentation, as much is contradictory, but it can be inferred that the Roman constitution and community was a self-regulating device, kept in perpetuity and in check by a series of checks and balances that prevented disintegration from within and also made the community better able to cope with threats from outside. To Romans, however, as Levick (1982) argues, this political system was seen explicitly as a moral obligation, with anything that upset the political balances being seen as something undesirable and immoral. Levick argues that, ultim ately, the political system had a built-in tension between the group and the individual, and that, ultimately it was this in-built tension that led to the death of the Roman Republic, through squabbles for individual power which led to the breakdown of Roman society. As we have seen in this paper, therefore, there are many different explanations for the fall of the Roman Republic, with the main theories being economic demise, immigration and overtaking by Barbarians and other groups, and political infighting which, it is argued, led to the ultimate demise of the Roman Republic through a disintergration of the moral fibre of Roman society. As to which theory of the fall of the Roman Republic one subscribes to, this depends on the literature that has been studied, and the quality of the sources used within that literature. Heather (2005) and Gibbons (1983), for example, both use quality primary sources, and yet arrive at different conclusions for the reasons behind the fall of the Roman Republic. It is perhaps most prudent, at this stage, therefore, to argue that a statement such as ââ¬Å"The Roman Republic was brought down not by luxury or corruption but by fundamental flaws in the structure of its political systemâ⬠can only be discussed in relative, not absolute, terms, as no one cause for the demise of the Roman Republic can ever, realistically, be said to have been the factor that caused itââ¬â¢s fall. The present paper has thus presented the various theories for the fall of the Roman Republic in this framework, in terms of offering a holistic view of the situation on the ground around the time of the fall; fundamental flaws in the Roman political system were, as we have seen, just one part of a complex situation which, together, led to the fall of the Roman Republic. Individuation in J.D. Salingerââ¬â¢s Shoeless Joe and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet
One could speculate that the human condition is that of fragmentation, a dichotomy of the many aspects of personality that make us who we are. C.G. Jung, the founder of analytical psychology formulated a school of thought called junginism to explain this state of disunity. One theory from the Jungianism school of thought is the process of "individuation.â⬠The process of individuation refers to the course in which an individual unifies and integrates all aspects of his/her personality. Individuation is clear in both the character ââ¬Å"Ray Kinsellaâ⬠from J.D. Salingerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Shoeless Joeâ⬠and the character Hamlet, from Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Tragedy of Hamlet the Prince of Denmark. Unlike Ray Kinsella, Hamlet was not able to reach individuation because of his melancholic depression and the dichotomy of his archetypes. Firstly, Hamlets process of individuation is stunted because of his melancholic depression. Throughout the play there are several moments where the reader becomes aware of the harmful nature of Hamlets melancholic depression has on his process of individuation. One of the most famous soliloquies in history ââ¬Å"too be or not too beâ⬠perfectly illustrates how Hamletââ¬â¢s melancholic depression is to the detriment of his process of individuation. The first portion of the speech is Hamlet contemplating suicide, only to be dissuaded by the fact that it is a sin to end oneââ¬â¢s own life ââ¬Å"To be, or not to be? That is the questionââ¬âWhether ââ¬â¢tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And, by opposing, end them? When a company expands globally, it is generally the responsibility of the HR managers to ensure that operations are staffed. International staffing has many unique challenges. Among these challenges are cultural differences, which are inherent in global business as well as the geographical obstacles of home office and remote locations being in different countries. Cultural differences such as religion, customs, language, etc. can be very challenging. More factors have to be considered when selecting host country nationals. Most host country nationals are already familiar with the culture of the host country but might still need training. In the case of the home country and third country nationals more training would be needed, for example new language(s) to be learnt, communication skills, knowledge of and tolerance and respect for religion, customs, rituals, etc. of host country. Cultural differences can prove to be very difficult to overcome. When recruiting internationally, HR departments must be particularly responsive to the cultural and other environments both domestically and abroad. Managing operations and people in many different countries is also challenging to global companies. A global company can send home country nationals to staff its international operations, which means relocation of these home country nationals to foreign countries known or unknown. The company has to keep track of the whereabouts and safety of these employees and even their families who might have relocated with them. Sending home country expatriates to establish activities, particularly in less developed countries and to work with local governments is generally very expensive. Challenges also have to be met when hiring third country nationals who are natives of a country other than the home country or the host country. My first point is that your use of words for the title is completely inappropriate as when you say "save" and "horrors" which is saying that the children are is some kind of danger and are in need of saving and that they are horrified by the thoughts of sport. Which I find completely wrong I can say that it is not horrifying. As I am a student at a sport ordinated school.My second point is that how good it is to do sport. Sure there might be some "humiliating" times and "misery" involved but that is all part of life. Sport keeps you fit and healthy, while a 'thrice daily smoke behind the biology block' does not which is probably the cause of your misery in sport.Front of Wingate Physical Education Institute, 195...As well as this Sport is an endorphin-reliving subject, which makes you happy and is also a proven way of fighting pain and stress. As you read, make notes on key concepts and topics you may want to cover. 3. Identify Topics to Cover. Once youve gotten a broad view of the subject, start thinking about what concepts you want your children to learn. Dont feel you have to cover everything- many educators today feel that digging deep into a few core areas is more useful than skimming over many topics briefly. It helps if you organize related topics into units. That gives you more flexibility and cuts down on work. (See below for more work-saving tips.) 4. Ask Your Students. Ask your children what they would like to study. We all retain facts more readily when were studying a topic that captivates us. Your children may be interested in topics that fall right in line with what youd want to cover anyway, such as the American Revolution or insects. However, even topics that may not seem educational on the surface can provide valuable learning opportunities. You can study them as-is, weave in related concepts, or use them as a springboard for more in-depth topics. 5. Create a Timetable. Figure out how long you would like to spend on the subject. You can take a year, a semester, or a few weeks. Then decide how much time you want to devote to each topic you want to cover. I recommend creating a schedule around units instead of individual topics. Within that time period, you can list all the topics you think your family would like to learn about. But dont worry about individual topics until you get there. That way, if you decide to drop a topic, youll avoid doing extra work. For instance, you may want to devote three months to the Civil War. But you dont need to plan out how to cover each battle until you dive in and see how it goes. 6. Select High-quality Resources. One big plus of homeschooling is that it lets you use choose the very best resources available, whether they are textbooks or alternatives to textbooks. That includes picture books and comics, movies, videos, and toys and games, as well as online resources and apps. Fiction and narrative nonfiction (true stories about inventions and discoveries, biographies, and so on) can also be useful learning tools. 7. Schedule Related Activities. Theres more to learning a topic than accumulating facts. Help your kids put the topics you cover into context by scheduling in field trips, classes, and community events that relate to the subject you are studying. Search out museum exhibits or programs in your region. Find experts (college professors, craftspeople, hobbyists) who might be willing to talk to your family or homeschool group. And be sure to include lots of hands-on projects. You dont have to put them together from scratch there are lots of well-made science kits and arts and crafts kits, as well as activity books that give you step-by-step directions. Dont forget activities likeà cooking, making costumes, creating ABC books, or building models. 8. Find Ways to Demonstrate What Your Kids Have Learned. Written tests are just one way to see how much your studentsà have learned about a subject. You can have them put together a research project that includes an essay, charts, timelines, and written or visual presentations. Kids can also reinforce what theyve learned by making artwork, writing stories or plays, or creating music inspired by the subject. Bonus Tips: How to make writing your own curriculum quicker and easier: Start small. When youre writing your own curriculum for the first time, it helps to start with one unit study or one subject.Keep it flexible. The more detailed your teaching plan, the less likely you are to stick to it. Within your subject, pick a few general topics you want to touch on. Dont worry if you come up with more topics than you can possibly cover in one year. If one topic doesnt work for your family, youll have options to move on to. Magistrate court helps a lot to minimize the workload of federal circuit courts. The said court has the limited jurisdiction to hear the minor cases of civil or criminal nature. Bankruptcy case deals by the court of Bankruptcy court since the credito rs are not in a position to pay more after liquidating their assets. The USA Tax courts entertain the cases of tax disputes between the parties. The mentioned court comprised of 19 judges appointed by the President who have the expertise on the tax laws. The English Legal System The Great Britain is always referred to a country where common law is prevailed irrespective of other continental country such as France where the mentioned law is called Civil law. A major portion of UK Law is based on legislative acts. It can be primary or secondary legislation. The acts of parliament are considered as Primary legislation where as the legislation of government bodies that the parliament is empowered to legislate is called secondary legislation.
