Homology refers to relation between characteristics in different species of organisms. Analogy refers to different structures which effect the same function. Bats and butterflies are quite different from distributively other, yet both have wings to rainfly. Bats fly and whales swim, yet the osmiums in a bats wing and whales flipper are strikingly standardized. Prior to the advent of Darwinism, homology was attributed to the experienceence of archetypes: biological structures are similar because they conform more or less to pre- pull rounding patterns. Charles Darwin, however, offered a different explanation for homology. Darwin proposed that bats and whales possess similar bone structures, because they were inherited from a common ancestor.

Homology does not prove that a set of animals is related by descent because both similarities and differences exist for any two animal types. So many examples exist that contradict the explanation of common descent.
