Juan Ponce De Leon was a Spanish explorer and soldier who was the first European to set foot in Florida. innate(p) in Santervas, Spain in 1460. Ponce De Leon then claimed the land for Spain.
He then decided to continue his explorations of the land and sailed down the coast.
He encountered virtually currents at one point and named the area Cape Canaveral (Cape of Currents). Ponce De Leon continued down the coast of Florida until he arrived at an island that had divide of turtles. He named the island Dry Tortugas because there was no fresh pissing on the island, and Tortugas means turtle in Spanish. Continuing up the west coast of Florida, Ponce De Leon entered the Charlotte Harbor area.
As he and his men explored inland for wood and fresh water, they saw the Calusa tribal village at Mound Key. They discovered that the Calusa were an unfriendly tribe.
