Ethnomusicology, according to the Merriam-webster dictionary, can be defined as the study of music in a socio- cultural context. The word ethnomusicology originated from 2 Greek words; ethnos center nation and mousike meaning music. An ethnomusicologist is someone who applies theories and methods from cultural anthropology, cultural studies and sociology, as well as other studies and disciplines in friendly sciences and humanities. So in a nut shell, ethnomusicologists examine music variantly; that is, as an aspect of culture. In this paper I shall be discussing the establishs of 3 ethnomusicologists while trying to mark any similarities or differences between their lines of work. The ethnomusicologists I distinguishable to work with are Alan Lomax, Dr. Kwabena Nketia and John Blacking. All three ethnomusicologists are different in their perception and interpretation of music. Alan Lomax is the son of a noteworthy kinlorist and author John A Lomax, with whom he started his career by recording songs sung by the sharecroppers and prisoners in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
